Hardware Firewall Antivirus Knowledge Base
what are mail server and firewall and antivirus hardwares?? i heard someone who is responsible for IT in a shopping mall that he will buy 3 hardwares (and call those servers) , one for firewall and one for mail server , what are these servers exactly??? i heard about the software ones.. but never heard about the hardware, anyone get a clue? understood, but he told me that these servers are not like a pc, they are just small instruments like the size of a switch
Integrated Firewall & Antivirus? I'm looking for a device (hardware) that integrates Firewall and Antivirus functions. The only thing so far that I've been able to come up with is the ZoneAlarm Safe@Office appliance which seems pretty good, but doesn't provide any info as to how the gateway antivirus works, how it updates, and how much it will cost after the trial period is over. So if anyone has any info on this product or similar products please let me know. This is for a small engineering firm with 12 users with 2 users using VPN on the weekends. More info - I need something that can be centrally administered, deployed, and monitored in a domain environment.
Can anyone suggest a relatively cheap firewall router? I was looking at the Linksys BEFSX41 firewall router. Basically, from what I understand with Windows Internet Version 7, it is better to have a router (or hardware firewall) than to depend on Norton's Antivirus and Firewall? Any suggestions? Is an upgrade to Norton's 2007 version good enough? What is bricking a router?
Diagnosing a hardware problem: why is my computer slow? I have a fairly new computer built from a barebones kit. It has an AMD 3Ghz processor, 1-2 gigs of DDR RAM, and a 260GB 7200rpm hard drive. It runs really slow with many applications, from Itunes to Firefox. I have run Adaware and Spybot, have antivirus and a firewall. I can't figure out what is causing the processor to run so slow. It seems like every time I open a program it's running at 100% for a minute, and two programs at once can bog it down completely. I can't watch flash video without choppiness. Photoshop is very slow. Is there any way I can figure out where the bottleneck is--what's not working? A hardware diagnosis? Or does it pretty much have to be software, which baffles me. I'm running XP Home.
Help with firewall please? I'm thinking of uninstalling Mcafee security centre and using AVG free as my antivirus software. What I would like advice on is, if I buy a wireless router that has a hardware firewall built in, would the hardware firewall along with the Windows XP SP2 software firewall be enough or would I need a stronger software firewall than the one built into SP2. Also could you let me know how secure these hardware firewalls are. Thanks in advance
Looking to BUY a Router with Firewall and AV capabilities? I have the following: -- I have just bought a DSL connection and 5 ip address to go with it. -- I still have not bought the Router. I would like to clarify a couple of things before buying something -- Instead of having an Antivirus and Firewall on all PCs I would like to buy a hardware AV and Firewall solution -- Are there routers which have Routing, Network Address Translation capabilities with Firewall and AV? -- If such a unit does not exist I may have to buy a router seperately and then plug in a Hardware AV and Firewall device. Appreciate all the guidance so far.
Router firewall, is it good enough? I have a home network between two computers where all my data is shared over the notwork. it makes me kind of nervous security wise. I have a linksys router with dd-wrt installed, and i have the spi firewall enabled. BUT i have the windows firewall disabled. I heard that hardware firewalls are the best, and dd-wrt makes a $50 router into a proessfional one. Basically I just want to know if having a router firewall enabled makes me secure from possible hackers, even if my computers lack a software firewall like zonealarm or whatever (i have an antivirus and antispyware, without active protection enabled. I hate enablingactive security programs because they take away cpu power. but i do weekly overnight full scans.
What do you suggest for computer security using free software? I currently have Comodo firewall, Avira antivirus, and a good hardware firewall. Is this enough? I have a slow processor so I'm nervous about adding too much. Do you have any suggestions for me? (yes, I know that it is impossible to be completely secure, but I want to get as secure as it is reasonable.) I have researched the Antivirus very throughly, and avira performs the best (that I could find.) If you suggested a different Firewall I'd probably listen to that. I really appreciate the comments about the anti spyware though. :-D I knew I was forgetting something.
Do the hardware components of computers get slower with time? (ignoring spyware, etc)? My laptop is getting dreadfully slow. Its 3 years old with not much installed on it these days. I formatted 4 months ago and have a firewall/antivirus, but its having a hard time processing things now. All I have installed on it is Microsoft word, firefox, and WoW. I used to be able to play WoW in full screen with high resolution, then one year ago I had to cut the resolution in half since it was getting choppy (fps, not latency issues). Last month I had to cut it down to the bare minimum graphics settings, and everyday it seems to be getting slower. Is it possible to burn out a graphics card/processor over time? Or should another format return it speeds like it had when I first bought it 3 years ago?

Major computer problem, why does my computer constantly have error reports and restarts all the time? I will be surfing the internet and suddenly it will close and a "send error report to microsoft" will pop up. It has redirected me to a microsoft webpage a couple of times saying that I'm experiencing this because of a software problem or hardware. I have also recieved a blue screen a few times. I took it to Geek Squad and they said nothing was wrong. They said they would optimize my computer and remove unused toolbars and that would fix the problem. It didn't. I took it home and the same things kept happening. This all began when I switched to DSL. Everyone tells me it's not the DSL but a software problem. I've restored my computer several times since than : have firewall up, antivirus and spyware by Webroot; K9 parental protection and 007 e-spy; Java; ErrorSmart are the only software I download on my computer each time I've restored it. What is going on and what can I do?
Windows Xp Home will not allow new drivers or hardware to be installed.? I'm actually working on another person's machine, it's a fully updated Xp home Vaio with 512 Mb of Ram, plenty of harddrive space, and a fully working internet connection. His computer appeared to be "slow lately" so I was firing up my flash drive with it's bag of tricks. No go. Add new hardware came up, refused to find new drivers even when pointed manually to /system32 or /system, nothing. So I uninstalled the USB devices, having read that works (apparently, no other new USB devices worked for this guy) The USB hubs will not reinstall either. Nor will a simple flash card reader I removed through device manager. Windows update finds nothing, rebooting does nothing. He has only one harddrive (with an unmounted partition for system backups, must be a Vaio thing) and one DVD drive. Software: He had a spyware scanner from TrendMicro which I replaced with windows defender. During this process, I also installed AVG antivirus. No firewalls, or other odd security software at all. I meant to say, I removed the USB root devices, the hubs and such, from device manager.
My monitor is acting funny; read details below? SORRY MY MESSAGE IS SO LONG Right. I have an ACER Aspire tt120e - 8830 A standard CRT 17 inch monitor, had for about 3 years. I was looking for a host for my website so i tryed addyour. then i clicked on wordperfect (blog site) and my monitor started flickering for no perticular reason. So i came off (quite dumbfounded) and shut the pc down. i have a Firewall (Hardware and software) with AVG antivirus. I have windows updates on and i dont use the pc much. Tried google and it said to use the degauss feature. So i did and it worked for about 2 mins and then that annoying flickering started again. I think the monitor is going and i have moved all magnetic things away. Anyone? please?
How do I sum up my "average" know-how about computers in my curriculum vitae? Im just wondering how to put into words all the know-how that I have regarding computer when I compose my CV. I can use MS Word, PowerPoint, a little of Excel, I can do some tweaks on a Windows-based pc, im fairly familiar with IE7 and now exploring FireFox, I can install (free)security software on a friends pc and teach them how to use it(antivirus, antispyware, antirootkit, firewall, antispam, antiphising, etc). All of these I came to know by myself using my home pc(no formal training) and by reading a lot of wonderful websites & forums. I dont know programming and unfamiliar with hardwares(I've never opened a pc). Now how do I sum them all up(short but impressive) in my CV? Being "computer literate" is a bit cliche for me. And, by the way, do you know of any free software I can download or website that can help me write a good looking CV(layout, theme, etc)?
Help with Unstable frame rates in games? I just got my new system set up. Core2 Duo e8400 Geforce 9800GTX+ 2GB A-Data PC2-6400 Ram Nforce 650i SLI M/B with bios update 2.7 Windows XP Pro 32-bit completely up-to-date Here's my problem. In Far Cry 2 and Unreal Tournament 3, stay at a solid 85FPS (V-Sync) but every 5 seconds or so (EVERY 5 seconds or so), it dips down to about 4-10 FPS for a couple seconds. The same thing happens regardless of how I've changed the settings. here's what I've tried. >Disabled Firewall, Antivirus,, and Diskeeper Auto-Defrag >Disabled V-Sync >Run CCleaner and Defragged >Disabled Hardware PhysX >Lower settings/resolution >Increased V-Sync Pre-render Frames >Under-&-Over-clocked RAM >Checked temps, just a hot Northbridge (expected from 650i) GPU 60C >disabling some services. Any Help?
My computer is restarting automatically, how to resolve this? Recently I upgraded my system with 2.4GHz Core2Duo Processor with Intel Original P31 motherboard along with 2GB DDR II RAM. I am using a 250GB of Seagate HDD. My OS is Win XP. During the installation of the OS there was a little problem encountered ( which I dont remember as of now ) but the installation was completed successfully. After which I found a pop up from the taskbar saying that a file was corrupted. So I ran chkdsk /r in the recovery console and it was better then. But I see my system restarting automatically (intermittent issue). Applications like Zone alarm Firewall/Antivirus, Azureus (aka Vuze), Firefox are crashing after sometime of functioning. I would like to know how to diagnose and resolve this issue permanently. Also wanted to know whether it is a Software or Hardware related issue ? I am requesting a fix from all the users who read this and kindly help me out. Thank you
Anyone know why Vista wont let me run anything downloaded from the internet? My hardware is fine. It is a new pc that came with vista pre-loaded. I've tried XP and it works fine. Even the Vista SP1 that I download from MICROSOFT wont run. I can download fine but the program wont run. Windows says the program has encountered a problem and needs to stop. Everything else works OK but for some reason, every single application or installer that I get from the net downloads ok but when i try to run it I get the same message. Tried turning off firewall + antivirus but same result. Turned off User account control, same result. Tried runnning them in Administrator mode same result. I can hear XP calling me back now. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks
Thinking about fixing computers for money...? I need a way to make some extra money & I figure I could do so by speeding up people's slow computers & making sure they have decent security. I've come up with a list of things that I could do, but I'm looking for more suggestions. Here's my list: Optimization: ● Disable unnecessary startup apps & services ● Disable unnecessary visual effects ● Disable windows sounds ● Optimize TCP/IP settings ● Optimize paging file ● Optimize Prefetcher ● Reduce Recycle Bin & Sys Restore space usage ● Uninstall unnecessary/redundant apps ● Disable indexing ● Defrag hard drive ● Remove invalid registry entries and defrag it ● Scan hard drive for errors ● Remove junk data ● Scan for spyware Security: ● Download latest software/hardware updates/drivers/etc. ● Configure automatic updates ● Configure firewall ● Install antivirus & antispyware ● Disable Windows Messenger ● Enable DEP I think that covers it, but is there anything else I could include? Also, how much should I charge? Thanks. I'd also like to add that I'm not too comfortable with the idea of working from the client's home (for multiple reasons), so I plan on advertising that I'll pick up their PC, do my work from the comfort of my own home, then have return the PC in 24 hrs (or same day, if possible). My question is, how can I ensure my trust that they'll get their computer back and that I'm not trying to scam them (it probably doesn't help that I'm only nineteen)? I figure I can play this to an advantage by advertising that they won't have to worry about being stuck at home for 1-3 hours because I do the work at my place, thus letting them have the freedom of going to work or wherever they might have to go. How does that sound?

computer wont boot to desktop, please help me!? i have a brand new computer, been working for 7 weeks without any problems. when i turned it off yesterday it said end now for the process for my firewall, which i recently installed after uninstalling my old firewall and antivirus a week ago, not sure if that has anything to do with it. when i turned it on it went to my desktop and had a small resolution and said new software or hardware found with the wizard thing, and said registry was lost but recovered but my mouse and keyboard didnt work. so i restarted and now it wont even go to my desktop, it only keeps bringing up the screen "new hardware or software found....please select safe mode, normal start up, or start up from last known configuration...: and i try each one, it goes thru the boot screens and brigns this one right back, i cant get to my desktop, what do i do?!?! can a firewal really affect my registry? is my only option to repair or reformat? i thought repair would make me lose evreything. does it now? does tihs have anything to do with all of the sudden my mouse and keyboard wont work in the usb slot? really weird that both problems happened at the same time

Yes my computer is slow and it boots slowly and sounds are not working,,,,,,when ever i restart my system sounds stop working....my Realtek Voice Manager from Realtek Semiconductor Corp. stops working and instead it says that i haven't installed any sounds drive. Well i did had many virus or malware and i even scanned with various antiviruses and anti spywares......and they did took the spywares and viruses out of my pc,,but still bugging persists......late boot, sound problem.......some kind of error is popping when i restart my computer called " generic 32" or some thing........and it says send error report or don't send,,,,,,,i check send error report still nothing happens and it still pops up and then i checked don't send and it again popped up 2 or 3 times and i went on clicking don't send error report.......and then it got silent......what is this generic 32 crap ? and how can i make my pc to normal other than re installation or format ? pls any suggestions becuase this thing is bugging me up from a long time......im gonna restart again to see what happens :-( .......I've used avast it took out one virus and then i uninstalled previous one and installed and used norton and it also came up with some viruses and i deleted those ( i even boot up scanned through avast nothing happened ) and then i installed avaira premium security ( 3 months free version ) and it took out a worm from my pc and i delete it......i kept this for 1 month and then late boot problem started from here..... And then i installed quick heal pro trial version and it also came out with some viruses and malwares and i repaired or deleted those. One noticing thing here is my sound problem had stopped for a while in the middle way back before installing this quick heal pro with firewall......but i had late boot problem and my internet started becoming a bit slow many times and cause of which i thought of installing this quick heal pro version with firewall and i installed this and this crapish firewall started stopping my connection speed .......it was blocking my own ip address......and i was surprised, why is this stopping my own ip address and sometime releasing.....( remember before installing quick heal pro with firewall my sound drives were working but i had late boot and a bit of connection problem cause of which i though of installing quick heal ) and when i uninstalled this firewall pro .......this problem of sound drive again started ( which i had some months back ) For anti malwares.....woooooo i had many i used adaware it came out with some and i deleted and i used superantispyware and it came up with some and i deleted it and spybot it also came up with some and i fixed it and how can forget the wonderful anti malware malwarebytes but it didn't detected any malwares i suppose i don't remember..and i used spywareblaster and 2 squared or something like that anti spyware and it came up with somethin and i even deleted those...well now im using 4 anti spywares spybot, superantispyware free, malwarebytes antimalware and spyware blaster and antivirus is only one obviously and that is quick heal pro trial version with its firewall uninstalled........ IT had the sound problem way back it was just like present situation but when i use to install sounds drive it use to work for days and stops working again.......and when this problem again started I'm installing sounds drive but after every restart this is saying that i haven't installed sounds hardware or drives or what ever this is............So shall i be using the above softwares ( registry and speedup ) ? or what shall i do ? pls any suggestions ?
My computer is top of the line but when I load pages and videos on the internet, it slows to a crawl.? Please read everything I have to say, I've received a lot of advice about things I already do. Okay, here's my computers specs so you know what we're dealing with here. E8400 cpu Vista 32bit 3.25gb of 800mhz ram 8800gt oc gpu 250gb free on a 320 gb hdd 750w corsair psu ip35 pro motherboard And this is what happening; when I boot up my computer it loads pages on the internet with no problem. Everything is snappy as with the hardware it should be. After being connected to the internet for an hour or so online videos begin to make my cpu usage spike to 100% slowing my whole computer not just the video. I've determined this slowdown is to increased internet usage, not videos. As soon as it finishes loading my computer returns to its snappy self. Also, my internet connection only suffers minimally (its not a slow internet). This problem persists until I do a reboot. Okay not here's where it gets tricky; I run CCleaner multiple times a day, I run virus scans every morning, I run spyware scans every week and I defrag my hdd once a month. I have minimal startup programs/services and closing both firewall and antivirus do not eliminate the problem, so it's not that. What could be happening as time goes on. Sometimes I don't even use the internet when i boot up my computer, but when I come home 5 hours later, the problems exists. Please help me. Thank you!
Windows CPU is 90-100%, but my idle is 65-80%. System runs slow until rebooted. Same on other boxes. Why? Windows CPU usage is 90-100% Idle is showing is 65-80%. When this happens, my system runs slow until rebooted. I have seen this behavior on many Windows boxes for many years across many versions and I have never seen even close to an adequate explanation on any site (other Yahoo! Answers to this question fault hardware, or try to explain it as a variation between two monitors, which might explain away 2%, but not huge numbers). (I suspect it's because the System Idle Process is actually using the CPU, and that it's a common fault of antivirus and firewall software that use low-level hooks to exploit this process, but I have no way for proving this) Is it possible for System Idle to actually use the CPU? (It has a PID, and a 24K memory footprint.)

Netgear DM111p ADSL 2+ is taking ages to "Renew or Get IP address"? Guy, this problem cropped up suddenly (no new hardware/software added or removed). I have a Netgear DM111p ADSL2+ router, Marvel built in LAN and BSNL Dataone Broadband connection. Of late the Local Area Connection is taking ages [2/3 minutes] to get the IP address (systray icon gives this info when I hover the mouse over it]. Sometimes I get the IP address and connect successfully, othertimes I have to switch off and then switch on the modem and retry.
