antivirus software?
I have been using AVG free edition (it updates itself every day) but it won't update for some reason. I tried doing it manually on the website but I can't get it to work. Should I just say bye bye to it and buy a new one? My dad thinks buying them is "a waste" considering we can get free ones online, but I'd much rather just have the peace of mind of knowing that we have software that actually works instead of having to download a new one every 30 days. Can someone recomend one?

- Have you tried Avast! http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- norton or mcafee...
- In a way your dad is right. Most of the paid and unpaid anti-virus software does not actually work. It just gives people a false sense of security. Even if you have anti-virus software installed you can still get a virus so why bother? Common sense is your only real protection against infection + Hijack This and CCleaner (both free). If you want real protection then get another operating system like a Linux distro Ubuntu or PCLinxOS. They do not get infected because they are far more secure than Windows.
- i've used norton b4 when i buy lptp n i get it for free. but it's only for three month n then i hv to buy a new one. the ori is expensive n since i dun hv dat much money, i tried using avg free, n up until now it seems fine. most of my fren also use it. y dun u try install it again. although it's free it should work out fine. other than that, mayb u could try bitdefender or mcafee. if u want it for free u hv 2 search for keygen which is troublesome, n if still dun works, n u hv the money, juz buy.
- it sometime does this. To fix download and save current files from website. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5 uninstall the version on your PC which has problems. reboot pc. run the copy you just downloaded. run the update. BTW nortons is a pile of p** Trend sell a good stuff, Frys.com sell it with rebates (assuming you're in the states)
- I know alot of people would suggest "Freebies" like Avast & AVG but I would go for one of either McAfee or Norton. Personally, I would recommend McAfee Internet Security 2007. You could get this off E-BAY for just a few pounds (£7 or £8). My 2006 version ran out a month ago and because I thought it was doing an excellent job, I am now using the 2007 version which is even better. It does all you would want it to do just working away in the background doing it's job....keeping your PC safe. You might hear some people saying that McAfee & Norton slow your computer down but it's only negligible considering you will have peace of mind. Up to you!!!!!!
- Why not try PC guard from virgin media this is free and it has everything you need in one package also it is updated every three hours so you stay protected and unwanted spyware cookies get deleted and the email is also scanned for virus's before you open it, http://www.virginmedia.com good luck
- Zone Alarm security suite is the best for this year, contains ant-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, IM protection, cash cleaner, internet filter. but security is not just about using an antivirus. you need to change certain security settings in ur windows, and have only one administrator account with a very long alphanumeric password and update your windows.
- Your old man is wrong if you want the best you have to pay for it, but if he is to tight to pay out then use a good free AV http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp DON'T USE AVG IT'S A BIT LIKE YOUR OLD MAN NEVER COUGHS UP WITH THE GOODS.
- i asked this same thing and i went on to computer active and they have loads some are free and some cost but you can get norton or panda ad-ware and a lot more
- No matter what A/V software you have it is going to be necessary to update daily.Sme with anti spyware, as new threats develop, and they do most days your software has to be taught to recognise them. Have you got AVG 7.5, the old version is now discontinued and will not update. have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.
- I use Panda. If you want to try some of their tools for free go to http://www.infectedornot.com That web site is part of their new campaign "Infected Or Not?". There you can try their new products (Panda NanoScan and Panda TotalScan) for free and, in exchange, they collect statistics that are presented in the campaign's website to raise awareness on the malware infection problem. You should try them, they have more virus definitions than anybody else and they detect all kinds of malware (viruses, trojans, worms, adware, spyware, hacking tools, etc.)
