best rated free antivirus program for home vista?

Could anyone suggest please the well proven and reviewed free antivirus software for vista home premium 32 bit. Further the norton that came preloaded does not get uninstalled as it asks for the insertion of the cd that I never received!

4. The best free ones are Avast and AVG, I would recommend the second as I have tried them both and the first slowed my computer down whereas AVG did not!
5. Avast is free and it works. It didn't slow down my comp and it reports viruses faster than avg at VirusTotal (a third party website).
